Google Photos Mistakenly Identified 2 African Americans as Gorillas

Jacky Alcine, a New York resident with the Haitian roots, discovered that Google’s image recognition algorithm sorted his selfies with a friend with the “gorilla” tag.

After posting a selfie with a friend on Google Photos, Jacky Alcine from New York noticed that the images were marked with the tag “gorilla," writes Independent. Alcine tweeted his complaints to Google.

A Google engineer, Yonatan Zunger, tweeted to Alcine to apologize and to reassure him that the identification system will be improving.

“We’re appalled and genuinely sorry that this happened. There is still clearly a lot of work to do with automatic image labeling, and we’re looking at how we can prevent these types of mistakes from happening in the future,” apologized Google.

In May the tag “ape” appeared under photos of black people on Flickr.
