Michał Siarek Won the New East Photo Prize

The special prize from Bird In Flight went to the Ukrainian photographer Elena Subach — she received £1,000 to support her ongoing documentary project.

Polish photographer Michał Siarek won the international photo contest the New East Photo Prize, organized by The Calvert Journal in association with Bird In Flight.

The judges, including two-time World Press Photo winner Donald Weber, Head of Photography at the Guardian Roger Tooth, recipient of the Aperture Portfolio Prize Alexander Gronsky, considered his work, Alexander, dedicated to Macedonia, to be the best among the shortlisted projects.

In addition to the winner of the main category, who will also have his series published as a photo book, another photographer received a special prize from Bird In Flight — Elena Subach from Ukraine will receive £1,000 to support her ongoing documentary project, The Sacrifice.

During the contest, which aimed to broaden the perception of the social and cultural landscape of the countries of Eastern Europe and the former USSR, the jury received over 1,000 applications — the best of them were published on Bird In Flight during the past month.
