The First Issue of She Shoots Film — a Magazine about Female Photographers — Is Published
She Shoots Film first appeared several years ago — first as a group on Facebook, and then as a stand-alone website and on Instagram. In the spring of 2017, the authors decided to turn the project into a photo magazine entirely dedicated to female photographers who shoot on film, Konbini writes.
According to Aliki Smith, one of the creators of She Shoots Film, the main aim of the magazine is to draw attention to film photography and fight the under-representation of women in photography. “I felt that the female gaze hadn’t and wasn’t adequately being represented in the wider world. As a maker of film photography and as a viewer of images and photographs, I thought there was a space for She Shoots Film – a space which encourages, supports, and draws attention to emerging and seasoned film photographers with a woman’s eye,” Aliki Smith says.
The first issue of the magazine includes works and stories from 31 authors, all of whom are women. In the interviews they share information about their work process and difficulties they encounter because of their gender. The next issue of She Shoots Film will be published at the end of the year and will be about motherhood.
