Instagram Explains Rules on Publishing Nude Photos

Company forbids sharing images depicting nipples, buttock and children with no clothes.

Instagram published updated Community Guidelines for the social network. Previously these guidelines were not specified, but now the developers explained in detail about what the moderators will keep and what will be removed. They have made a request that users use only authorial content and that they don’t violate the law. The company would also like for users to respect and support other users. Instagram also announced the requirements for images containing nudity.

“We know that there are times when people might want to share nude images that are artistic or creative in nature, but for a variety of reasons, we don’t allow nudity on Instagram. This includes photos, videos, and some digitally-created content that shows sexual intercourse, genitals, and close-ups of fully-nude buttocks. It also includes some photos of female nipples, but photos of post-mastectomy scarring and women actively breastfeeding are allowed. Nudity in photos of paintings and sculptures is OK, too,” writes the developers.

Moderators reserve the right to remove the photos featuring naked children with no prior notice.

The company posted these explanations only three weeks after restoring images by artist Rupi Kaur featuring menstrual blood, and one month after Facebook published similar rules.
