Portfolio: Jaclyn Brown
In the section “Portfolio” the “Bird in Flight” editors showcase photos of young photographers, who work in various genres, and ask them to share why they decided to do photography, what objectives they are pursuing, who they learn from and what they do specifically learn. In today’s issue, we present the portfolio of Jaclyn Brown.
When and how did you become a photographer?
I started taking photos when I attended community college because my art professor said I should take photographs if reality was what I wanted to show. I bought myself my first dslr and started taking pictures. I did an internship with a studio photographer, and then I transferred into VCUarts Photo/Film.
What kind of photography do you do? What are interested in photographing?
Conceptual Fine art and Documentary I would say. I am interested in religion, mortality, (in)securities, histories, preservation, artificial existences, visual metaphors, and truth.

Why are you a photographer?
I am a philosopher at heart with important things to say about the world and I need a visual outlet that also replicates the world with out any modification (through straight photography) almost as to provide beautiful proof to validate my arguments or to ask questions about the world through my pictures.
What makes a photograph good?
The right combination of a lot of things. Good subject matter, great light, the right moment, technical ability, smart concept, originality, a creative voice, and a little bit of ambiguity or mystery.
What kind of difficulties in the industry you face as a photographer?
Financially, it is a very difficult profession. Also, it is very hard from a mental/emotional standpoint because it can be very lonely actually. I get little sleep and I’m always on the move doing something.
What photographers are you inspired by?
Too many to name. Brian Ulrich has been the biggest inspiration to me. I’ve had the pleasure of working with and learning from him the past two years. I’ve seen how one actually goes about being a successful fine art photographer and I’ve seen how difficult it is.
Other people who’s work I love: Alec Soth, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Susan Worsham, Phillip Toledano, Doug Dubois, Tod Pappageorge, Angela Strassheim, Carolyn Drake, Murray Ballard… the list goes on.

What camera do you use?
I switch up the camera I use depending on what the project is. Right now I have a Nikon D610, a Mamiya 645, and a monstrous but lovely Calumet 4×5 view camera.
Do you make your living by photography?
A main source of revenue for me comes from my wedding photography. I enjoy it immensely even though it is totally different from my art. It gives me a break from my personal work while forcing me to stay fresh with my equipment and creative with new ideas. I also work as a part-time art guard at an art museum here in Richmond, VA.
What would you do if not photography?
I would maybe be a sculptor, a writer, a world religion professor, or an art history professor.
What are your goals?
I would like to go to grad school soon for photography because there is a lot I still have to learn. I really would like to ultimately teach photography at the college level and I want to publish a book of my photos one day.
