Eastern Bloc: Five Photographers of Romania
In the “Eastern Bloc” series, Bird In Flight tells the stories of Eastern European photographers who have been recognized in their home country, but are little known abroad. Today’s edition features Romania.
Freelance photojournalist from Bucharest. Has collaborated with publications for more than 12 years, photographing news reports, sports events, and other subjects. Began to travel the world in 2008, documenting the lives of different people. Has worked in Ecuador, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Madagascar and Ghana.
The “Catch” project is about the fishing industry in Ghana, where more than half a million people earn a living exclusively by fishing. Fish is the main source of protein for Ghanaians, and the country’s per capita fish consumption is by far the highest in the world — nearly double the world average. The fishing industry is a safety net for the low-income population; in the case of job loss or financial difficulties, at least they won’t starve.

Multimedia producer and photographer from Bucharest. Received a Master of Arts at the School of Visual Communication at Ohio University. Has worked with Reuters, NewsIn, Ziua, Gaurdianul and FZR.
Alexandra’s project follows ballerina Sena Hidaka. She trains every day, preparing for the role of Kitri, one of the main characters in Don Quixote. Sena has worked in the Romanian National Opera for several years, but this is her first major role. Following the performance, the artistic director of the National Ballet of Romania awards Sena the title of prima ballerina.

Photojournalist from Bucharest. Studied cinematography and is currently working on several long-term projects about life in Western Romania.
Ioana started work on “Post-Industrial Stories” in the beginning of November 2012, together with fellow Romanian photographer, Marin Raica. They traveled the country for two years, documenting life in industrial cities. The central focus of the project is the changes experienced by Romanians after the fall of communism and the stoppage of industry.

The “Aging Romania” project shows the demographic problems of the country. Economic instability and lack of jobs have led to a decline in birthrate and the aging of the nation. Ioana explores the world of longevity and tries to answer the question of how exactly Romania is aging and whether longevity is a gift or a commodity.

The project “Religious Card” focuses on the influence of the Orthodox Church on the lives of Serbs. After decades of persecution and pressure from the first German occupation and then the communist regime, the Orthodox Church is on its way. Andrey has said, “With this project, I wanted to interpret the relationship between the Serbs and what their Church has become. As a Romanian, I hoped that, by looking at our Serbian neighbors, I would come to a better understanding of my own largely Orthodox nation.”
