Modern Porn in the Making in Katia Repina’s Project
Age 27
“Most men are often afraid that they are not manly enough, especially in bed. Pornography addresses this fear.”
Robert Jensen. Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity.
My project has documented the shooting process, performances, and festivals of various genres of pornography in the past four years.

More and more women in Spain dare to try pornography themselves. This happens for several reasons: it is largely because of the economic crisis, which has affected the larger part of the country, but also because of the misconception that the life of the adult movie actress is all fame and glamour. Soon after the women get into the industry, they realize that porn does not pay as much as it used to, and are surprised to find out that one can hardly make a living by acting in porn or participating in erotic festivals in Spain.

Alternative porn employs actors with tattoos, piercing, and natural bodies, without plastic surgery modifications. This is how lifelike stories are created: with real emotions and orgasms, and less chauvinism compared to classic porn.

The woman-oriented pornography market is growing every year. Some feminists, who earlier only criticized classic porn for exploiting women, started making porn the way they see it.

Feminist porn in Spain is represented mainly by the studio of a Swede, Erika Lust. She makes porn with the same attitude as regular movies are made, and pays a lot of attention to detail. At the same time, she avoids certain themes: for instance, when the porn actress is a victim. In her movies, women are depicted as equal to men, they are the main protagonists, and not merely tools and objects for pleasure that help men live their fantasies.

Another genre, postporn, uses pornography as a political tool for spreading feminist ideas. This kind of porn is not a part of the pornography industry, as it brings no economic gain. Its difference from usual porn lies in the fact that sexual arousal in postporn is not a goal in itself and serves rather to convey a political message.

Classic porn, where a man and a woman are not equal, where a woman participates in sex only in the name of the man and for the sake of his pleasure, may lead to bad consequences. In her book ‘Postporn: How It Was’ Maria Llopis explains that feminists use postporn to change a patriarchal and sexist society. She thinks that “Porn reflects our sex-oriented society. It shows all our troubles. We live in a world where violence against women is acceptable in everyday life. Regular porn is sexist, and it seems logical that it is. We have the porn we deserve”.
