Elena Anosova Wins the Andrej Stenin Contest

Winners of the Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest organized at Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency’s intiative were awarded in Moscow.

On Wednesday, June 3rd, the jury of the Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest named a winner. The Grand Prix and 500,000 rubles (about $9,000) were awarded to Yelena Anosova, a photographer from Irkutsk, for her photo project “Dissociation.” It tells the stories of the women serving sentences in Russian prisons.

“A neutral or almost neutral background, subdued, sort of faded colors allow us to focus on the details – hands, clothing, tattoos, gestures, the faces and eyes of the heroines of Yelena Anosova’s separation story, to commiserate, to penetrate their world, which is permanently under surveillance. Barbed wire in sharp contrast to bright flowers is a powerful metaphor. It’s not often that we look female convicts in the eye or see the specifics of their daily life. This intensifies the impression,” said Natalya Udartseva, one of the jury members.

More 5,000 entries from 54 countries were submitted to the contest. The winning entries can be seen at the contest’s website or in the Moscow exhibition that will be held in the fall.
