WPP Winner Is Fundraising For Exhibition In Paris
Russian photographer and World Press Photo Award Winner, Sergey Ponomarev, launched crowdfunding campaign on Ulule to print out a catalog and photos for an exhibition in the Paris Iconoclastes Gallery. The goal of the campaign is to collect $7,614.
“It’s my first exhibition in France. It will cover several stories from my journeys to the Middle East and war conflict zones: Afghanistan, Syria, Ukraine,” said Sergey Ponomarev to Bird In Flight. “In one of her books, writer Susan Sontag explains why people watch other peoples suffering. It’s because they have an instinct to observe it. In earlier times, entertainment consisted of fencing, executions and other violent exhibitions. Nowadays we don’t allow ourselves to conduct violence publicly, but that’s because we have only lived in the humanism era for 200 years, it’s still part of our genetic memory.
My photography does not reflect suffering so obviously. I try to decrease the degree of the suffering and concentrate on art. Speaking metaphorically you can say more compared to documenting sufferings.”

The exhibition “Collapse” is planned from April 9th to June 9th, 2015.
Sergei Ponomarev covers major world events. He has worked with the Associated Press since 2003. From the beginning of the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict, Sergey has traveled to the Middle East on long assignments. His images from the conflicts in Libya, Syria and Gaza have won numerous international photography awards including two World Press Photo Awards. This year a series of his photos Gaza Conflict took third price in the category “General News.” Sergey now works as a regular freelancer for the New York Times and Paris Match.
