Opening the festival, Robin Laurance delcared the goals of Photography Oxford Festival: to raise the value of photo art to the level of paintings, sculptures and other graphic arts. The organizators are counting on such a large-scale event to assist the public in becoming as oriented with contemporary photography as they are with music and cinema. Laurance plans to hold the festival every two years.
Twenty exhibits are displayed during the three weeks of Photography Oxford Festival, presenting the works of famous photographers from throughout the world. The Selektif competition is held for beginning photographers.

Also in the festival’s program are film viewings and a series of lectures on the contemporary photo industry. Some of the themes are, «Does the Role of Eyewitness to History Remain in Photojournalism?», «The Role of Criticism in Contemporary Photography», «Shooting Wildlife» and «The Work of Henry Fox Talbot.»
