Photojournalist Michel du Cille Dies
On Thursday photojournalist Michel du Cille, who was covering the Ebola epidemic, died from a heart attack in Liberia. He was 58. The photographer collapsed while returning on foot from a village where he was on assignment for The Washington Post, and died on a way to a local hospital, says The Washington Post.
M. du Cille worked as photo editor for The Washington Post for 26 years. He was a three-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize: for coverage of a volcano eruption in Colombia in 1985, two years later for capturing drugs devastating effect on a community in Miami, and in 2008 for an investigative series on the treatment of veterans at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC. Two years ago Michel du Cille decided to leave his position as The Post’s director of photography and returned to the field as a full-time shooter.
In fall this year, after a trip to Liberia, Syracuse University rescinded an invitation for him to speak to photojournalism students because of fear that the photographer may be a carrier of the Ebola virus.
“Especially now,” he wrote, “I am cognizant of what I could have told them — about the power and necessity of capturing images that interpret the human experience while daily life unfolds under the cloud of Ebola.”
