In the Portfolio section Bird in Flight shares projects by young photographers working in various genres and asks them to talk about their reasons for choosing their career, their goals, educational background and inspirations. This issue features Marcus Møller Bitsch.
When did you get involved in photography?
My passion for photography came to me when I was 10, on our vacations to the Mediterranean Sea. I needed to show what fish I saw under water – which my parents didn’t believe in, so I bought myself a disposable underwater camera to prove them wrong.
I took up photography, seriously, after a knee injury, since I suddenly was not capable of doing water-sports, and had a lot of time to pursue my newly profound passion. I began a project called “The 365 Days Project.” A project where I had to take a photograph each day for a year. This was done from 2012 to 2013, while I was doing my last year at high school.

What do you shoot?
I would describe the core of my photography as minimalistic conceptual fine art. My photos are often built up on a foundation of a relatively simple concept or idea, and display some kind of surrealism. I chase the goal of not manipulating my photos — I would like to make my photos look surreal without being it. I’m interested in telling stories through my photos. The subject is rather irrelevant, if the possibility of telling a story through it, is there.
Why do you consider photography your main thing?
Since childhood I always have loved telling stories. Though, I have never been good in expressing myself in words, especially not to written words. So it came very naturally to me that the best way to tell my stories was through the visual medium. I learned how to write and read very late; it never really caught my interest at all. Throughout the years, I have tried a lot of different mediums to express myself. Why photography became a bigger passion than the other visual mediums, I do not know.
What, in your opinion, makes a good photograph?
A good photograph is something that provokes you, to feel and think. It is something you can go back to, again and again, and see something new every time.

What difficulties do you run into as a photographer?
Since I am self-taught, there is a lot of more or less basic things I miss, regarding working in the business.
Who’s experience do you find interesting?
It changes a lot from time to time, but Tim Walker, Alex Prager and Rodney Smith are definitely some of the photographers who always make the cut. Regarding artists, I am very fond of Michael Kvium, Renee Magritte, Elmgreen & Dragset, Peter Martensen and Edward Hopper
What camera do you shoot with?
Just upgraded from a D700 to a Nikon D800E.

Do you earn a living from photography?
Yes, I have been doing that for the last year and a half.
What would you do when your not doing photography?
I would properly work in another art medium, or work as an art director of some kind.
What are your goals?
Create beautiful art that inspires, provokes and will be remembered, and have a good time doing it.
