Portfolio: Filipp Morozov

In our "Portfolio" series young photographers show off their work and answer questions from the editors. In today's issue, we have a native Muscovite who lives in London, doing fashion shoots and experimenting with exposure.

Filipp Morozov, age 26

Born in Moscow, lives in London. Graduated with a Master’s degree in Image and Communications from Goldsmith University, London. Works in the film industry.

How did you get into photography?
When I was a child I was begging my mother for a camera so that I could take it with me on vacation and take pictures of what I saw. I really enjoyed taking pictures while traveling. I took photos of the Eiffel Tower and fluorescent lights while we were in Paris. Photography became a serious hobby for me when I was a teenager, and I was going to alt-rock concerts and doing some photojournalism for Internet and print zines.
What do you shoot?
I shoot staged portraits. I love it when there is a live object in the shot. If two people are on the same wavelength, it manifests itself in the results and the connection is palpable.
Why do you think that photography is your “thing?”
I always wanted to be able to blink my eyes and then photograph everything that comes into view. I’m also pretty good with my hands. Lately I’ve been into experimental methods of developing film. I especially like shooting people in ways that they don’t expect to see themselves.

What, in your opinion, makes a picture great?
The important things are the pose, emotions, the look and the lighting. This, however, isn’t the standard ideal. The ideal, for me, is when the model has her back unnaturally arched or when there’s a look of sorrow or lust on her face. There are three things in a photo that make it truly great: head, heart and everything below the waist. If even only one of these elements is present, the photo will be great. If there are two, it will be awesome, and if there are all three, it’ll be ideal. The mental, emotional and sensual components are all equally important.
What difficulties have you faced as a photographer?
Even professional models are often sexually repressed. They experience psychological discomfort and it’s difficult for them to open up. It’s hard to work with someone who doesn’t have natural sexuality. You don’t feel any drive.
Who or what influences you?
Sarah Moon, Irving Penn, Horst P. Horst, Helmut Newton, Deborah Turbeville, Irina Ionesco.
