Portfolio: Arnold Veber

In our "Portfolio" series, young photographers show off their work and tell us about themselves. In today's edition, we have a graduate of the Rodchenko School who takes pictures of youth in unrestrained frenzy.

Arnold Veber, 23

A graduate of Igor Mukhin’s studio at the Rodchenko School.

Everything started for me at a summer camp in Turkey; there, I was surrounded by rich children who weren’t used to the idea of limiting themselves in any sense. Having found myself in their company, I really felt like I was uninteresting and unwelcome. I mean, I was only 14 years old, I had a ton of issues and I was even afraid of myself. I did have a soapbox with me though, which has become a tool for self-affirmation and a means of communication with society, which seemed to be out of reach before.

After graduating from high school, I went with the flow and got into the cinematography and photography department at VGIK, but I failed the exams, and that was that, school was over and I was headed nowhere. It wasn’t clear what I should do. My friends knew what they would be doing in the coming years, but I was totally empty inside and depressed. After that I fought off boredom with the help of my camera, trusted my instincts and shot what I thought would be interesting.

This gradually became my main hobby. I started being ambitions and at some point I began my “365” project, which I finished successfully, and within a few years I was convinced that I love photography and wanted to understand it more deeply. I don’t have anything else in life besides that. Even going out in the streets without my camera doesn’t make sense anymore. Photography is a part of me. When I have my camera, I feel whole.

I take photos of Russia in our unstable era and of the youth of this nation who escape their problems and the inability to solve them in an unrestrained frenzy, living day-to-day because of a lack of understanding of how to live past that.
All options are on the table, of course, and you can do whatever you want. It’s like the sea – you can swim wherever you want, but exactly which direction to go in is unclear. This feeling paralyzes and oppresses.
