Madonna Wannabe: Anna Grzelevska Captures Her Daughter’s Coming-of-Age

Julia Wannabe is the project about my daughter’s coming of age. I aimed to find the source of a woman’s nature and catch that moment when a girl becomes a woman. This is a tricky and anxious transition period. Childhood in the photographs is usually the country of happiness, sweet and naive. Our memory tries to erase all the roughness from that image. When I captured Julia, I wanted to get a comprehensive picture of a coming of age. It is not a report nor a diary, or even a family album, it is my attempt to capture some universal traits of this period.

The title of the project is a reference to the Madonna wannabe phenomenon. Young girls listen to Madonna’s music, they dress like her and put on makeup like her. This is how they are trying to understand Madonna, understand the feminism that she embodies. This behavior may seem funny, but it helps the girls express themselves.
