Wait for Me: Dogs Left Alone in Cars in Martin Usborne’s Project

British photographer Martin Usborne made a photo series about the fear and loneliness of dogs that have been left in cars by their owners.

Martin Usborne, 42 years old

British photographer. Born and lives in London. Studied animation, psychology and philosophy. Has a passion for animals.

Once when I was a child, my parents left me in the car and went to the supermarket. They were gone for about 15 minutes, not more than that, but for a four-year-old child this time seems to have been enough to experience a terrible sense of fear and loneliness and remember that for a lifetime. Later, I understood that animals feel the same way. They are just as vulnerable as children are, but no one hears them. The main issue in this project is just that: the fear of being abandoned and not being heard.

The most interesting thing in the process of working on this project was the dogs’ reactions, which were always different. Some of them acted happy towards me and were wagging their tails in the hope of being released. Others, on the contrary, saw a threat in my lens and began to bark, and others didn’t react at all and just sadly watched the scene unfold. So many subtle reactions. This is why I love dogs.

This series of photos was very well thought out and, as you may have guessed, not spontaneous. I deliberately created these images to draw everyone’s attention to the helplessness of animals in human hands. This is worth remembering for anyone intending to get a dog.
