Photographer Lucien Clergue Dies

Iconic French photographer dies at age 80, after a long illness.

Founder of the National the Rencontres d’Arles photography festival, author of more than 75 books and a longtime friend of Picasso passed away Saturday in Nimes, at the house of his daughter, says Afp.com.

While being a self-taught photographer, who selected the women’s body as the main topic of his art, Clergue became the first photographer who was elected to be a member of The Academy of Fine Arts of the Institute of France, and in 2013 he became Chairman.

“France, the home of photography, has lost one of its greatest ambassadors who carried this art to the four corners of the world,” said former French culture minister Jack Lang.
