Wow Effect: Nude Photographers on Instagram

Born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Worked for Vogue, Vanity Fair, Interview, The Face and I-D, has published seven photo books.

German photographer and former model Ellen von Unwerth is famous for provocative but also “appropriate” photo shoots. She owes her fame to a “Guess?” commercial featuring Claudia Schiffer. Also, she is known for a few shorts for major fashion brands and pop music videos.

On her blog von Unwerth posts fashion backstage footage, magazine covers and selfies with Madonna, Azealia Banks and her favourite model Drew Barrymore.

Provocative American filmmaker, creator of music videos for Sonic Youth, King Missile, Marilyn Manson and 11 books of erotic photography. Kern became famous through his short films – shocking and aggressively sensual.

On his Instagram the photographer and filmmaker posts images from his own series (models’ nipples are normally pasted over with typical stars), some video footage, with an occasional shot from his own everyday life.

Dutch Bart Hess is more of an artist than a photographer. He uses fabric and construction materials to transform human bodies. The resulting emotions can vary from repulsion to an awed stupefaction: how can a human mind generate something that incredible? Wow.

On his blog Hess posts backstage from video shootings, his own birthday parties, photos of preparation for a Frankfurt exhibition, and a show in Lisbon.

In the last ten years Fabio Borquez has had two photo books with nudes published: Chicas (2008) and Erotic Wonderland (2011). On his blog Borquez posts self portraits with naked women and fashion shooting footage.

King of contemporary provocative photography, Richardson, apart from fervent cooperation with fashion brands, magazines and celebrities, uses Instagram for promoting his own images.

Strangely or not, there’s not so much erotic stuff, mostly normal snapshots of the photographer with famous people and his own friends: Jared Leto, Lady Gaga, Carla Bruni and Woody Allen. Every image contains Terry in his perpetual checked shirt. Or just plain Terry. Shirtless.

Mona Kuhn is known mostly for her large scale photographs of nudes. She works mostly with non-professional models – her friends and family, as well as members of nudist communities. In Kuhn’s photographs there is no eroticism or pornography. Her subjects seem to be clad in their own skin.

Her Instagram account has shots of the opening ceremony of The Broad independent Art Museum in Los Angeles, her travels in the California desert and various exhibitions around the world.
