Photo of the Day: Basement Sanctuaries of New York City

German photographer Gesche Würfel has created a photo series Basement Sanctuaries which features the life on the bottom floors of New York City. She started the project back in 2010, when she and her husband decided to rent an apartment in Manhattan. While searching for a place to live, Würfel saw a lot of apartments located in the basement of residential buildings and found out that this type of apartment are in high demand with Latin Americans and others migrants. The photographer took images of the “underground world” and explored the decorations of the rooms with no windows.
