Photo of The Day: African American Hairstyles

Nakeya Brown created three photo projects about black hair culture.

The exhibition “In Private Moments” by the photographer Nakeya Brown was held last week in New York City. Brown explores African American culture using women’s hair styles. The exposition includes images from three photo projects: “The Refutation of “Good” Hair,” “Hair Stories Untold,” and “If Nostalgia Were Colored Brown.”

“Hair for black women is still going to be the first point of communication in terms of looking at one’s self and others looking at you. It’s complicated, man. It’s such a marker of so many different things that it’s difficult to separate hair from myself and my identity as a black woman,” says Brown in her interview to The Cut.
