Photo of the Day: German Grannies in National Costumes
German photographer Eric Schuett created the project, “Village Queens,” featuring the last German peasant women who still wear traditional costumes everyday.
For fifteen years Schuett has worked at a museum dedicated to preserving the memory of village life in Southwestern Germany. In 2009 he began a journey through the country searching for the women preserving authentic German culture. He communicated with historians and various museums all over Germany, collected the contacts of the village queens, and then contacted them and visited their homes. Schuett says that because of their old age most of the women spend their days at home, resting, doing housework, or tending to their gardens.
According to the Schuett, seeing one of first models in her traditional attire was like being catapulted into the past. After hearing her stories he felt the first pangs that would eventually lead him in search of these elderly peasant women, whom he believes will sadly die out within the coming years, writes Feature Shoot.
