Street Artists Create Their Versions of Classical Paintings

Sotheby’s and Fat Free art gallery asked street artists from different countries to create their own versions of classical paintings from the 15th-17th centuries, rethinking them in a modern way. All the resulting works together with the originals will be displayed during the exhibition, which will take place in New York City between June 2 and June 14.

According David Pollack of Sotheby’s, one of the goals of the project called Street Masters is to introduce people from the younger generation, many of whom are fond of street art, with the rich and exciting history of art. “In a new context, old masters suddenly appear fresh again. The people who traditionally visit our respective spaces [Sotheby’s and Fat Free] rarely intersect, so we’re excited to mix things up and facilitate new ways of looking.”
