Photo of the Day: Plankton

The “Tara” Oceans expeditions collected 35,000 samples of the tiny organisms.

Scientists published macroimages featuring plankton – one of the smallest organisms. The photos were taken from 2009 to 2013 during the TARA Expedition that covered 140,000 km of the world’s ocean, and collected 35,000 samples of different types of microorganisms from single-cell algae to fish larvae.

“Planktonic marine ecosystems represent more than 98% of the volume of our biosphere,” said the researchers.

The photos were published in a special issue of Science devoted to the Tara Expedition’s findings.
