Photobook About Soviet Shop Windows is Published
The publishing house Thames & Hudson release the book Window Shopping Through the Iron Curtain by photographer David Hlynsky, which depicts Soviet store windows. The book was created from an archive project of Hlynsky’s – between 1986 and 1990 he made approximately 8,000 color images on the streets of Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Eastern Germany and Russia.
“I purposely avoided dramatic moments and newsworthy events. In a cityscape without commercial seduction, the banality of the shop windows underscored a real cultural difference between East and West. Communist windows began to display the quagmire of bureaucratic inefficiency . . . In the dying days of the Cold War, I saw these windows as a vast ad hoc museum of a great failing utopia,” said the author.
