Photo Project About Russian Grannies Receives Grant

Nadia Sablin will be able to publish a book about two old ladies who live in the depth of the Russia, and will receive $3,000 grant.

The jury of prestigious photo competition CDS/Honickman First Book Prize awarded a grant for publishing a book about the photography project Aunties, completed in 2010 by an American with Russian roots, Nadia Sablin. In the series, Sablin depicts the life of two sisters, Alevtina and Ludmila, and their father. The women, in their seventies, left the noisy city to spend the rest of their life in a village in Leningrad Oblast. Photos feature the traditional way of rural life in Russia – old women are chopping wood for heating the house, brining water from the well, and making their own clothes.

In addition to book publication (it will be released in November 2015), Sablin will be awarded with $3,000 and her photo story will be presented as a personal exhibition at Duke University.
