Warhol’s Triple Elvis Sold For Record Price

73 out of 78 lots were sold on the Christie’ Post ­War and Contemporary Art sale on November 12th, says the press ­service of the auction house. The evening sale hit $852.9 million, the highest total in auction history. Bidders competed for the pieces of art of Abstract Expressionist, Pop and Contemporary works from some of the century’s most influential artists, including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Willem de Kooning, and Martin Kippenberger.

“Warhol’s Triple Elvis” stole the show for a record price of $81.9 million. Second place was shared by “Four Marlons” of the same artist and Cy Twombly’s Untitled sold for $69.6 million each. The records were set also for Francis Bacon’s “Seated Figure” ($44,965 mln), Gerhard Richter’s “Abstraktes Bild”($31,525 mln), Ed Ruscha’s “Smash” ($30,405 mln), Willem de Kooning’s “Clamdigger” ($29,285 mln), Franz Kline’s “King Oliver” ($26,485 mln), Jeff Koon’s “Balloon Monkey” (orange) ($25,925 mln), and Martin’s Kippenberger’s Untitled self­portraits ($22,565 mln).

Let us recall that one week ago Sotheby’s also held a record breaking auction and made $422,1 mln for 58 lots.
