Hannah Fraser found herself in an unusual occupation – she works as a mermaid – modeling for underwater shooting. Hannah is also an environmental activist and a sea-life campaigner.
Fraser wanted to become a mermaid since early childhood. “At age 9 I made my first mermaid tail out of orange plastic material. The heavy waterlogged tail helped me develop a strong dolphin-style of swimming,” says Hannah on her website. She was able to work with Martin Selecki, who suggested ways the tale could be improved. Since then, she has been modeling for the best underwater photographers in the world, including Shawn Heinreicht.
Today, Hannah Mermaid’s videos on Youtube have millions of views; she has more than 47,000 followers on Facebook, and 72,000 subscribers on Instagram. Omega, Cirque Du Soleil, Atlantis Resort Bahamas, Mirage Hotel-Vegas, Chicago museum of Natural History, and Cannes Film Festival are just few of her clients.
Hannah has been photographed swimming in the open ocean with tiger, white and whale sharks, dolphins, manta rays, seals and more. The mermaid says she was most impressed with the whales, “When we got back in the boat we were crying. This emotional release happened that was so powerful, and I knew at that moment that I would put my life on the line to protect these creatures.”
Hannah dedicates a percentage of her earnings as a mermaid towards ocean conservation charities. She has cooperated with Surfers For Cetaceans; she has modeled with white sharks for an eco-tourism series and has participated in a project to end the slaughter of whales and dolphins in Japan.
Her work requires constant practice: the model blows up a large balloon every day to strengthen the lungs, practices yoga, deep breath hold practice, as well as aerobic/dance practice. Now the mermaid will begin a documentary project about her underwater career.
