The Best Shots from the Rencontres d’Arles 2015 Photo Festival

Jet packs, South American tribes and old Vegas - Bird In Flight showcases a selection of the best pictures from one of the oldest photo festivals in Europe, with reportage from The Guardian.


In the city of Arles in the south of France, from July 6th to September 20th, 2015, the international photo festival Recontres d’Arles (“Meetings in Arles”) will take place. It is the first photography festival in Europe, founded in 1970 by photographer Lucien Clergue, writer Michel Tournier and historian Jean-Maurice Rouquette.

The festival organizers will hold tours of the exhibitions, symposia, discussions, workshops, portfolio review and evening parties. Almost 96,000 people visited Rencontres d’Arles in 2013.

One of the main ideas of the festival is to showcase the lesser-known work of young and already established photographers to the world. Bird In Flight presents a selection from The Guardian on the best shots of the exhibitions at Rencontres d’Arles 2015.


Anouk Aime, from the series “Fellini, 8 1/2 in Color” by Paul Ronalda. At the producers’ request, Paul Ronalda took photos on the set of Fellini’s “8 1/2” in black and white, but still loaded one color roll in the camera and then forgot about it for decades. Now, for the first time, we have the opportunity to see how the set looked in color.

Reims, Notre-Dame Cathedral, 2013-2014, from the series “Facades” by Marcus Brunetti. For the last ten years, Brunetti has been traveling around Europe and shooting the most impressive cathedrals.

Omar Victor Diop, from the series “Diaspora,” 2015. For “Diaspora,” Diop posed for self-portraits that put him in the role of legendary African personalities and/or footballers, revealing the notion of “the other” of today.
