April Photo Contests

Prestigious Inge Morath Award for female photographers, a contest for young photojournalists with a prize of €35,000 from the Henri Cartier-Bresson foundation, publication in the British Journal of Photography and other opportunities selected by Bird In Flight.

At the beginning of each month Bird In Flight publishes the most interesting photo contests for professional and amateur photographers.

Deadline: April 7, 2017.
Award: main prize of £10,000, £1,500 for the category winners.
No entry fee.

Astrophotography contest organized by the Royal Observatory Greenwich. To participate one has to upload up to ten images. A separate category is created for participants under the age of 15, three winners will receive £1,500, £500 and £250.

Award: €35,000.
No entry fee.

An open photo contest for documentary photographers and photographers with an approach close to that of documentary set up by the Henri Cartier Bresson Foundation. In order to enter, photographers have to send a recommendation letter from an establishment active in photography — a museum, a photo community, an art school, a college or university, a publication or a publishing house. Entrants need to send 15 to 20 printed images from a completed body of work, a project description in English and French, a concise biography, and a filled out application to HCB Award, Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, 2 impasse Lebouis, 75014 Paris, France.

Award: $5,000.
No entry fee.

Every year the Inge Morath prize is awarded to female photographers under 30 to support the completion of a long-term documentary project. Entrants are asked to upload their photo project, a description, a curriculum vitae and an ID scan to the contest’s homepage. One award winner and up to two finalists will be selected by a jury composed of Magnum photographers and the head of the Inge Morath Foundation.

Award: $1,000 and a chance to publish one’s works.
Entry fee: $35.

An open photography contest established by Daylight publishing house. Participants are asked to send a series of 15 to 20 images with captions, a one-page artist’s statement, a biography and a CV.

Award: €10,000 and a personal exhibition at Galerie L’Escale in Levallois, France.
No entry fee.

French contest for young photographers (under 35). To participate one has to submit one project (15 images, open theme), its description in English or French, an application and a CV.

Award: $10,000.
Entry fee: $65.

A contest organized by Duke University’s Center of Documentary Arts is dedicated to the memory of Dorothea Lange and Paul Taylor. To participate one has to submit their portfolio (up to 20 images) with a description. Particular attention will be paid to projects that combine strong visual elements with words and texts.

Deadline: May 8, 2017.
Award: publication in BJP and participation in the Free Range photo exhibition in London.
Entry fee: £10-£40.

The contest organized by the British Journal of Photography accepts submissions from upcoming photographers. Only students and recent graduates (up to five years after receiving a diploma) are eligible to participate. The judges panel consists of the magazine’s editors, Assistant Curator at Tate Modern Emma Lewis, Magnum Photos’ Photographer Diana Markosian, Online Editor at AnOther Maisie Skidmore and other industry representatives.

Award: €800 to €6 000 for category winners.
Entry fee: €15 for one section, €25 for two, €35 for three, €45 for four sections and €5 for the Single Shot Award section.

Italian documentary photography contest is divided into five sections: Master Award, Spotlight Award, Short Story Award, European Photographers Award and Single Shot Award. Participation in the latter requires a submission of up to five images, for the Short Story Award — of five to ten images, and for the remaining awards — twenty to forty images.

Deadline: June 26, 2017.
Award: £1,000 for the best single image and the best series, £500 for category winners.
Entry fee: £18 for one image, £27 for three images, £45 for six, £65 for a series of six to ten images.

Photographers can submit single images in several categories: “Life”, “Identity”, and “Border” categories, as well as a series of images on any subject. All profits will be donated to The Lavender Trust at Breast Cancer Care, UK. Winning photographs will be exhibited in Getty Images Gallery in London, UK.
