Photo Series in NatGeo About the People of Detroit

Photographer Wayne Lawrence shot a photo project for National Geographic about the people of Detroit, a city that economically collapsed during the oil crises in 1973. Lawrence began his project in 2012 when Detroit’s mayor declared bankruptcy due to an inability to pay a $20 million dept. Lawrence shot photos of people still living in Detroit, and talked to them about their lives.

“It’s is a hard knock city. Detroit is a place built on struggle. Anywhere you find places like this, there’s bound to be beauty and soul. This is a human story that needed to be told,” says the Lawrence.
