Jury names finalists of the Environmental Photographer of the Year 2014 contest

The winners of the social photography contest have been announced in London

On the 24th of June in London the finalists of the 8th International competition Environmental Photographer of the Year were named. The contest was sponsored by company Atkins and run by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management. Photographers who participated in the competition were those whose work covered social and environmental issues.

The title of the photographer of the year was awarded to Mohammad Fahim Ahamed Riyad from Bangladesh who also received cash prize in the sum of $8,500. According to Photography Monthly, his photo of a firefighter looking for survivors after a forest fire touched hearts of the jury members.

“In Dhaka, Bangladesh, about 400 shanty homes were gutted and four people died in this incident, including a six years old child. However, no casualties were ever officially reported and the cause of the fire remained unknown”, — Mohammad said about the photo.

The winner in the “Film of the Year” category is British photographer Sean Gallagher for his work The Toxic Price of Leather. More than 10,000 photos were submitted for the competition. Entries were judged on impact, composition, originality, creativity and technical ability. The best pieces will be on display at the Royal Geographical Society in London from June 23 to July 4, followed by a tour to other venues nationally from July 19 to November 2.
