Portfolio: GORSAD

We went to art school together. Before we started to work as GORSAD in 2011, we were a bunch of good-for-nothings.

Photographers or artists? We choose the latter, not to think too much about it. Photography currently is the most suitable medium for our ideas.

We mostly get ideas from youth culture, its aesthetics, traditions, hangouts. We try not to complicate our works with messages. Usually, we are just making fun of things.

Most often we photograph our friends, but it happens that we meet people in the streets. We don’t have to explain anything to people who get us, with them it just works out. From our experience, it makes no sense to try to explain or offer something to people who don’t understand our work.

Our shoots are more like hangouts.

We try to think them through, of course, but there is always room for improvisation, which has lately yielded some interesting results.

It is not always that we don’t give a damn about composition, but we don’t follow the trends blindly either. The things that we are doing now have always been relevant for us, since the times of X3M magazine.

You have to want to be published and exhibited abroad to do it. Many photographers and artists don’t aim for it, don’t take it seriously. There is no foolproof advice or a set of rules, the most important thing is to not shy away from breaking social stereotypes and foundations, and to be active.

You can’t do it without being provocative, it is very interesting to make fun of stereotypes.

However, there is always a thin line that you can’t cross, you simply have no need to do it. Of course, there are people who have a superficial perception of what we do, and it results in certain misunderstandings. However, in general, we do not have the goal of needing to be understood by everyone.

We have no idea why we are unique, it could be because we take things lightly and we don’t sweat it. I don’t think we are in for a radical change, as we have found ourselves and we will continue working in this direction.
