Talent Show: Chloe Aftel

When Chloe Aftel is not busy shooting advertising campaigns for big brands, she takes portraits of women whom she finds everywhere: through friends, on social networks and in the streets.

I had some post-grad education in film production, but I hated the school and applied what I learned to shooting still images. I find subjects all over the place, from girls I see on the street to agencies, friends of friends to random people online.

Of course, people always have feelings about how they look and some don’t want to have their picture taken. I’m sure someone along the way wasn’t into it, but so many were. The last thing you want is a subject who doesn’t want to be there.

I let the models know they are in control. If something isn’t working for them, they want to stop, they don’t feel right about an element, we stop.

The last thing you want is a subject who doesn't want to be there.

I actually don’t use filters for my works, it’s all different kinds of films. I don’t shoot much of this on digital.

I was lucky enough to win a bunch of awards which encouraged me to keep pushing myself forward.

The difference between personal and commercial projects is that personal shoots are much more subjective while advertising has to appeal to a broader audience.
