Canadian Indians in 1910s in Harry Pollard’s Photographs

A selection of photographs from a collection at the Provincial Archives of Alberta.

In the early 1910s, famous studio photographer Harry Pollard traveled around Canada to take a series of photographs of local Indians, who are one of the first nations who settled in Western Canada and Alberta.

His photographs capture, among others, people from Siksika, Blood, and Sarcee tribes. The number of Sarcee people went down to 200 in the mid-20th century, but has since went up to 2,000.

Several dozen portraits taken by Pollard are now part of the Provincial Archives of Alberta.
