Unofficial Selection: Instagram Accounts of WPP Winners

Even those are not professional photographers would find it interesting to follow the work of the best photojournalists in the world. However, it turned out not every winner of World Press Photo has a personal website, and many of them either don’t have Instagram accounts, or post very rarely. Nevertheless, photo editor and journalist Anna Nakonechnaya found 11 blogs worthy of attention for Bird in Flight.


Fulvio Bugani

Italian photographer who received the 3rd prize in the category “Contemporary Issues, singles” for the portrait of Indonesian transgender people. Fulvio’s Instagram has street shots of Istanbul, Havana, Tiraspol and his native Bologna.

Tomas van Houtryve

This Belgian photographer started his career as a reporter for Associated Press in Latin America and was the first to photograph a military prison in Guantanamo. In 2013 Tomas took interest in drone-assisted photography, and a series of shot that he made were awarded 2nd prize in the category “Contemporary Issues, stories” at World Press Photo. The photographer has lately posted mostly black-and-white pictures on his Instagram.

Malin Fezehai

A Swedish photographer who received 3rd prize in the category “Daily Life, singles” for the photograph from the wedding of Eritrean refugees in Israel. Malin specializes in portraits and photojournalism, she photographed the submerging Kiribati islands, exploitation of the underaged in Ethiopia and the life of women who were victims of war in Sri Lanka. She also shoots for advertising campaigns (Budweiser, Converse and Nike). On her Instagram she posts pictures from trips, the latest pictures are from the Middle East.

Sarker Protick

Lives in Bangladesh. Teaches photography at the Pathshala South Asian Media Institute. Shoots for The New York Times, National Geographic, Wired and other big editions. Received 2nd prize at World Press Photo in the category “Daily Life, stories” for his series about life and relationship of his grandmother and grandfather. His Instagram mostly has works in black and white.

Turi Calafato

Italian pharmacist and self-taught photographer who received 3rd prize in the category “Daily Life, stories”, became a documentary photographer by accident. One of his main series — the beaches of Sicily. In Turi’s Instagram we find unpopulated landscapes of Sicily, portraits and travel photonotes from his trips around Europe.

Pete Muller

Received 1st prize in the category “General News, stories” for his story about Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone. Muller worked for The New York Times, The Washington Post, Newsweek, Time in Congo, Kenya, Mali, Afghanistan, the Palestinian territories, in Somalia and South Africa. He mostly posts work material on Instagram.

Sergey Ponomarev

Independent photographer since 2012 (before that used to work for Associated Press). Winner of many contests in Russia and other countries, was nominated for Pulitzer Prize this year. Received 3rd prize in the category “General News, stories” at World Press Photo for his story from Gaza Strip. Ponomarev’s Instagram has a lot of curious shots that have not been published in media.

Ami Vitale

Photographer and traveler who has traveled around 75 countries, received 2nd prize in the category “Nature, singles” for a photograph of a baby black rhinoceros. Ami’s Instagram has pictures of pandas, rhinos, elephants and tranquil inhabitants of Sri Lanka.

Anand Varma

Started doing photography while studying biology at the University of California. Now Anand is an independent photographer and videographer, staff writer for National Geographic. Among other things, he received the 1st prize at World Press Photo in the category “Nature, stories”. Anand’s Instagram is full of close-up gems.

Arash Khamooshi

Arash received 3rd prize in the category “Spot News, stories” for a story from the public execution where the mother of the victim was present. She has forgiven the killer and prevented him from being hanged. Iranian photographer has other harsh series under his belt, but the stories he publishes on his Instagram have different atmosphere: pensive city landscapes, black and white portraits of the passers-by, travel photographs.

Kieran Doherty

Irish photographer started his career as a stringer for Reuters News Picture, and after getting acknowledged in photojournalism, started working on his own projects. He received the first prize at World Press Photo in the category “Sports, stories” for his story about Wimbledon. His Instagram has his pictures in different genres, taken in Asia, Africa and Europe.

Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko museum will host World Press Photo 2015 (an international contest for photojournalists) exhibition from June 1 to June 30. The price of tickets ranges from 20 UAH (for retired individuals) to 150 UAH (couple’s ticket).
