Earth Day Plastic Trash Photo Show in NYC

For Earth Day, artist Alejandro Duran prepared a series about the impact of the consumer culture on wildlife.

On Earth Day, April 22, the exhibition Washed Up by Alejandro Duran opened in New York. The artist collected and sorted plastic trash, carried by the ocean’s currents to the shores of Sian Ka’an, Mexico’s largest federally-protected reserve. He arranged it on the beach and took photos. His collection includes sculptures made from plastic bottles, tooth brushes, plastic lids, and light bulbs. According to the author, he was able to identify plastic waste from fifty nations on six continents that have washed ashore along the coast of Sian Ka’an.

“The resulting photo series depicts a new form of colonization by consumerism, where even undeveloped land is not safe from the far-reaching impact of our disposable culture,”said Duran.

Duran also presented a documentary about the reserve, Washed Up.
