Photo Photo Book about Soviet Soldiers Captured in Afghanistan

Photographer Alexey Nikolaev collected stories about Soviet soldiers captured in Afghanistan, and proceeded to live in the country for a long time.

Moscow-based photographer Alexey Nikolaev launched a fundraising campaign to collect funds to publish the photo book Forever in Captivity. It features six stories of Soviet soldiers captured in Afghanistan, and proceeded to live in Afghanistan. Each subject of the project converted to Islam, created a family, and speaks Dari. Three of the ex-soldiers returned to Russia, but sometimes they wish to be back in Afghanistan.

“They say that the war is not over until the last soldier is buried. The Afghan conflict was “over” a quarter of the century ago. But we do not know anything about the soldiers who were kept in captivity by the Mujahideen. It means that the war in Afghanistan is not over yet,” writes the photographer.

Nikolaev plans to continue his work on the project and asks for help from people who know soldiers who have returned from captivity in Afghanistan.

Recently, Nikolaev talked to Bird In Flight about his ten favorite photos.
