500-year-old Albrecht Dürer Engraving Found in a Flea Market
A retired French archeologist and collector discovered an engraving of a German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer on one of the flea markets of Sarrebourg, France, The Guardian writes.
The seller was asking only several euros for a copperplate engraving Maria Crowned by an Angel, dated 1520, which he found in one of the local houses. When the archeologist bought the engraving, he saw a stamp of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart on the back and voluntarily returned it to the museum.
Anette Frankenberger, an expert at the Staatsgalerie, said that the work was lost during the WWII, but is well-preserved. The museum has not yet decided how to display the finding to the visitors: “We have to find the right setting to present it in.”
