200 Cinemas All Over the World Screen 1984 to Protest Against Trump

On April 4, the screenings were scheduled in the US, Britain, Sweden, Croatia, and other countries.

On Tuesday, April 4, about 200 cinemas all over the world scheduled to show Michael Radford’s 1984 — a screen version of George Orwell’s dystopia. Most of the the cinemas that signed up for the event are located in the US, but the movie was also scheduled to be screened in other countries, including Canada, the Netherlands, Britain, and Sweden.

According to Dylan Skolnick, one of the initiators of the project, he started thinking about it several months ago — after Donald Trump won the election for US President and the fears related to his statements and actions. “In particular, this undermining of the concept of facts and the demonization of foreign enemies,” Skolnick says, “really resonate in 1984.”

The choice of date — April 4 — was not accidental: this is the day when Orwell’s novel starts.
