Instagram of the Day: Photographs of Earth from Space

The blog @dailyoverview, which publishes photographs of the Earth from space or from a bird’s-eye view, got its name due to the phenomenon called the overview effect — the change in perception that occurs when you look at the Earth from orbit or from the lunar surface. According to astronauts, from this perspective, political and even military conflicts seem petty, and the vulnerability of the planet and the need to protect it seem obvious and compulsory.

Check out this stunning drone photo of the “Hidden Beach” in Islas Marietas, Mexico. The islands where the beach is located were created thousands of years ago by volcanic activity and are still uninhabited. Sand patterns are seen here in Salta, Argentina. Salta is situated 3780 feet above sea level in the northwest part of the country. The palette of colors in the sand is caused for a variety of reasons. The red occurs from large amounts of iron in the sand that have broken down, and stained the sand a rust color. Everglades National Park in Florida is the largest tropical wilderness in the United States east of the Mississippi River, covering more than 1.5 million acres. The Cuajone Mine is located near the district of Torata, in the southern range of the Peruvian Andes. The mine is best known for its copper deposits, but other materials such as silver, zinc, and molybdenum have been extracted there as well. Tailings are the waste and by-products generated by mining operations. The tailings seen here were pumped into the Gribbens Basin, next to the Empire and Tilden Iron Ore Mines in Negaunee, Michigan, USA. Once the materials are pumped into the pond, they are mixed with water to create a sloppy form of mud known as slurry. The slurry is then pumped through magnetic separation chambers to extract usable ore and increase the mine’s total output. I am incredibly excited to fly to Tel Aviv this afternoon to speak at Magic, a yearly conference focused on design and architecture. Located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, Tel Aviv is the second largest city in Israel and is recognized as the country's financial center and a major technology hub.
