Saatchi Gallery Announces the Winner of the Best Selfie Competition

The shortlisted works are exhibited next to the self-portraits by Van Gogh, Rembrandt, and Velázquez.

Dawn Wooley from Britain became the winner of the international #SaatchiSelfie competition, organized by the London Saatchi Gallery. The jury, which included artist Idris Khan and photographers Juno Calypso and Juergen Teller, considered her work the best from over 14,000 submissions, It’s Nice That writes.

Wooley’s photograph, as well the as the pictures by ten other shortlisted authors, is shown at the From Selfie to Self Expression exhibition, which opened on March 31 in London. The exhibition also includes self-portraits of iconic artists — Van Gogh, Rembrandt, and Velázquez — as well as selfies taken by Barack Obama, Benedict Cumberbatch, and other celebrities, and works from project done by professional photographers.

“The range, diversity and creative flair of 14,000 entries exceeded all our hopes and expectations,” Nigel Hurst of Saatchi Gallery says. “It was difficult to choose ten to shortlist, let alone one overall winner. We hope that the competition has encouraged anyone with a smartphone to realise its potential as an artistic tool.”
