Be Pride Like Ukraine: Coverage of Berlin Pride

This year's Pride in Berlin became one of the largest in history. Just like in 2022, a Ukrainian walking group marched through the streets of the German capital. Victoria Temnova captured the moments of the event with her photographs.

This is already the 45th Berlin Pride in support of the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, and queers (LGBTQ+). The event took place on June 22nd, known as Christopher Street Day (CSD), and featured around 75 trucks leading a massive crowd through the city center along a 7.4-kilometer route. According to the organizers’ estimates, up to half a million people gathered for the pride. Participants stopped near the Brandenburg Gate.

The slogan of the Ukrainian walking group this year was “Be Pride Like Ukraine,” comprising around 500 people, including Ukraine’s Ambassador to Germany, Oleksiy Makeiev. So, in addition to traditional posters demanding action against intolerance and discrimination, there were also many expressions of solidarity with Ukraine.

In 1969, police raided a gay bar on Christopher Street in New York, sparking the beginning of the LGBTQ+ rights movement.
