Visipedia Project Identifies Bird Species from a Photo

California Institute of Technology and Cornell University launched the Merlin Bird Photo ID as part of a Visipedia project. The new service helps to identify a bird that appears in a photo. To use the software, an user has to download an image, identifying the date and place the photo was taken, and show the bird’s eyes, beak and tail. The intention of the project is to help ornithologists to collect more visual data about rare bird species.

The website is currently running in a test mode. Data about 400 birds of the Northern America is available. The probability of a correct identification is about 90%. Merlin Bird Photo ID does not work on tablets or mobile devices yet.
