Gauguin Painting Sells for Record $300 Million

“When Will You Marry” by the French impressionist became the most expensive painting in world history.

Last week in London, Swiss art collector, Rudolf Staechelin, sold an oil painting by Paul Gauguin, “When Will You Marry” (1892), for $300 million, reports The New York Times. The name of the buyer is unknown, but it was said the painting will be sent to Qatar.

The buyer will take ownership next January, after the painting will be presented in exhibitions in Madrid and Washington. For the last 50 years the painting was on display in the Art Museum in Basel (Switzerland).

Previously, the most expensive painting in the world ($250 million) was “The Card Players” by Paul Cezanne, which was purchased in 2012 also by a buyer from Qatar.
