Giovanno Troilo Will Be Not Deprived of Victory in World Press Photo Competition
The jury of World Press Photo Competition confirmed the award to contemporary issues story winner Giovanno Troilo. Troilo was accused of slander and violation of journalist ethics, but the jury investigated the shooting of Black Heart of Europe and did not find could not find any reason for disqualification of the photographer.
The dispute concerned a photo with a couple having sex in a car. The mayor of the town where the photo was taken, Paul Magnette, suggested that it was staged. Staged photos are not acceptable for contest participants. According to the photographer the lovers allowed him to photograph them freely. The jury considered the photo as documentary, using the argument that the couple planned on having sex in the car regardless of whether the photographer shot photos.
