Ilya Atlas Age 28

Photographer from St. Petersburg. Studied Math at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. Exhibited his works in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, and Poland. Participant of Innervisions, a travel exhibition of street photography. In 2012–2013, curated the student exhibition Politekh Photo, judged by Sergey Maximishin and Pavel Markin.

— My love of photography started with museums in my childhood, digital camera at school, and meeting the right person in my student years. Today, I photograph on an Olympus OM-D and iPhone, and before that I used Canon DSLR cameras for five years.

I shoot in the street and travel genre. I am inspired by the street itself, its rhythm, sounds and smells. I am interested in people, their emotions, and interaction with each other. The shape, the color, the light, the atmosphere — to make you want look at this photograph for a long time.

I just want to say ‘Hi!’ to the audience, and then have them understand me without any more words. Photography in the modern world is a way to share some beauty, emotion, story that you noticed, without words.

I would like to never lose interest in creativity. I think that the creative process can have no aim, the point is just to be in it. My main job is unrelated to photography, so I don’t think that much about the financial side.

To be a good photographer, you need enthusiasm, love for life, and a flexible mind. A good photographer always has something to say, a good photographer masters the visual language. To be in demand, you need a good audience — I think that few people now are ready to take time to think about a photograph because of the excess of visual information and the feeling of the lack of time.
