Face of American Bankruptcy

In "The Debt Project" Brittany Powell makes portraits of the US citizens who entered bankruptcy.

After the artist Britanny Powell lost her job and entered poverty because of the 2008 economic crash, she decided to investigate the role debt can play in our identity and how we relate to the world.

Within The Debt Project Powell makes photos of bankrupt Americans surrounded by their belongings, and asked each of them to write a personal story about their debt. For two years she conducted 32 interviews in San Francisco, New York City, and Portland.

Recently Powell has started Kickstarter campaign to collect money to continue the project. The artist states that she needs money to interview people in each of states in order to obtain proper representation of the cumulative image of American bankruptcy. So far she has collected half of the needed $11,000. The campaign will end on November 20th.
