Link of the Day: Archive of Russian Photography

A large collection of photographs dating back to the 1860s is now available online.

More than 70,000 digitized photographs from more than 40 Russian museums are now available online. The Multimedia Art Museum together with Yandex launched Russian Photo, a web portal that allows users to explore the history and development of photography, mostly in Russia, starting from the 1860s.

It is planned that the website will be constantly updated, partly by its users, who will be able to upload photographs from their family archives there. Besides, the visitors will also be able to act as curators of virtual exhibitions — by compiling collections from the available photographs and writing comments on them, The Art Newspaper reports.

“We wanted to visualize history, as visualization is always more emotional. We’ve had this idea for a while, and we started on it several times, but every time it did not work out. Now we finally present our joint work,” Multimedia Art Museum director Olga Sviblova said.
