American Photographer Stanley Greene Dies

Famous American photojournalist Stanley Greene died on Friday, May 19. The founder of the international photo festival Visa Pour l’Image Jean Francois Leroy wrote about it on his Facebook — he did not mention the cause of death, but said that the photographer has recently been fighting a serious disease.

Stanley Greene was born in 1949 in New York City. Photographer Eugene Smith advised him to study photography at the School of Visual Arts, after that Greene photographed in different genres. However, he seriously considered photography as a career only in the late 1980s when he started working as a photojournalist. He captured the fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany, covered the Chechen War in Russia, and other military conflicts all over the world, including Georgia, Iraq, Somalia, and Lebanon.

Greene won numerous World Press Photo awards, as well as many other prestigious awards in photojournalism. He lived and worked in Paris since 1986.
