Vogue Photos from 1920’s Discovered

Todd Brandow, a curator of exhibitions in a London photo gallery, found more than 2,000 rare photos in an archive of Condé Nast (publishes GQ, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair and Vogue). The photos were made between 1920 and 1935 by photographer Edward Steihen, who was a leader in the Photo Secession Movement in the beginning of the last century, advocating for the development of photography as an art.

The photos feature famous cultural luminaries and political leaders – Winston Churchill, Katharine Hepburn, HG Wells, George Gershwin, Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, WB Yeats. Another part of the collection consists of photos in an art-deco style with women modeling designs by Chanel, Lanvin, Lelong and Schiaparelli, reports CNN.

“There was a rumor that there were archives in the Condé Nast offices in New York that nobody had known about. It was difficult to get access, but when I finally got in, they told me that it had all been sold and nothing was left. But then the archivist rolled out these boxes of 2,000 prints. It was one of those great ‘oh my God’ moments,” commented Todd Brandow.
